Lofoten, Norway
A dream for the active
Many people dream of going to New Zealand, on the other side of the globe. Without in any way diss that experience, it still feels a bit to go over the river for water. Why not start with Norway this? Here are some of the world's most beautiful scenery, with deep fjords and rugged mountains that plunge straight down into the flat calm water.
More postcard-like than the archipelago Lofoten will not be. Follow the winding roads, stay overnight in the picturesque fishing villages and spice up your days hiking, kayaking, fishing, climbing or surfing. A roadtrip through Lofoten is a dream for the active tourist, and despite the country's oil generally expensive price point, significantly more affordable than a trip to New Zealand.
Suitable for: Hurt buns, adventurers and nature romantics.
Best time to go here: Summer is the most popular, but also the most hectic. Many therefore prefer spring or fall.
The best tip in Lofoten: Meet the ocean giants
Lofoten is one of the best places in Scandinavia for watching whales up close. Summertime is especially sperm whales visible, in late autumn comes the killer whales. Whale watching cruises are organized including in Andenes on the island of Andøya and in Svolvær. A day trip by boat is highly recommended.
