Burma
The new Thailand?
After decades of dictatorship and isolation, Burma is about to break through as one of Asia's hottest destinations. Burma, or Myanmar as the country is officially called, is like the missing link between India and Southeast Asia. Here Himalayas foothold among both samosas and lemongrass before the nation rounded off to the south by the Andaman Sea tantalizing mosaic of pristine djungelöar and beaches. In Rangoon await the golden Shwedagonpagoden, while Pagan bidding on a mysterious continent of thousands of pagodas and temple ruins.
The tourism industry is still rough and inadequate infrastructure. But a trip to Burma is still memorable and runs partly through railways having been around since the British colonial empire days, and boats along the mighty river Irrawaddy. An alternative to Thailand for all who yearn for pioneering spirit.
