Portugal
Good wine and cold baths
They have Ronaldo and they went to the World Cup this summer. But that's not why we have chosen Portugal as one of the year's destinations. A better reason than football is the Douro Valley, where vineyards are tight and the river winds its way beneath the slopes with neatly planted grapevines. Stay at the quinta, vineyard, go boating on the river and finish with a glass of port and a swim at Douroflodens outlet in the icy Atlantic Ocean in the coastal city of Porto.
Then head to the capital, which is hilly San Francisco, small as Amsterdam and romantic as Paris. In Lisbon, listen to Portugal's own blues music, fado, performed every evening to music Interested in Bairro Alto and Alfama.
Nearby Lisbon are also world-classed castle town of Sintra, which comes from a fairy tale and situated on a hilltop, and classic seaside resort of Cascais, where one moves to the cover of a tourist brochure from when Grandpa was young.
Suitable for: Wine lovers, worshipers of the true and vibrant local culture and all who believe that the Mediterranean is a warm and jolmigt inland sea.
Best time to go here: September-November (the grape harvest) and MAR July
