Dominican Republic
The beauty on the other side hotel wall
One might think that the Dominican Republic is all about upscale hotels with private beaches and lavish buffets included in the price. But outside the hotel walls on the East Coast is a country waiting to be discovered - from the capital, Santo Domingo's colonial area with cool stone houses and lush parks, to tropical rainforests and the Caribbean's highest mountain.
Find your very own pure white beach in Bahia de las Aguilas, soften salsa hips a late night at a bar in Las Terrenas and visit Jesus in Puerto Plata. Taste cheap and delicious mofongo (mashed plane trees with garlic and fried pork) on the local neighborhood restaurant, test school Spanish is the old men in the nearest Colmada (store / bar) and learn to surf on the north coast.
What about the much talked about crime then? Yes, it is good to take the admonitions seriously, but still with a grain of salt. You need not be afraid to take the bus, and people are generally extremely welcoming and nice. With a dose of vigilance baked into curiosity, you can travel independently here.
Suitable for: Sports Geeks, nature lovers, history and culture enthusiasts, sun worshipers and dance.
Best time to go here: The heat is constant throughout the year, but it rains more during May-October. If you want to avoid the peak season (at the risk of feeling a little lonely sometimes) October is a good month.
The best tip of the Dominican Republic: Nature Experiences
It's well worth making a boat trip from nice Samanáhalvön in the north, to the nature reserve Los Haitises. See Tainíindianernas cave paintings and enjoy being in the middle of nature, surrounded by frigate birds, pelicans and mangrove forest.
