Dolomites, Italy
Classical mountain
They are not top but beautiful. The peculiar limestone mountains of the Dolomites in the north eastern corner of Italy has long enchanted visitors. One of them was the writer Ernest Hemingway who drove the Fiat Ambulance in the mountains during the First World War. Later he came back to classic ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo (filming location for Bond roller Your Eyes), sat down behind the typewriter and above panoramic window, pumice, the Amarone, rattled down some well-founded rows and looked hurt buns on the slopes.
From Cortina is only a few hours down to Venice. Is there a more enticing combo: skiing and a deckchair on a sunny and snowy terrace one day - and gondola in the Grand Canal and an aperitif in the bar at the Hemingway favorite Gritti Palace second day.
Summertime is fantastic hiking. The Fanes-Senne, one of Europe's largest nature reserve, the views are magnificent with pale mountain peaks and lush alpine meadows sloping as taken from the Sound of Music.
Suitable for: Skiers, hikers, gourmets, literature lovers and art geeks.
Best time to go here: Dr. Jan-MAR for skis and Jun SEP hiking.
